Governance
The governance structure within Athena Learning Trust is designed to provide both strategic oversight and local accountability. Athena is governed by a Board of Trustees, chaired by the Chair of Trustees, and supported by the Members of Athena who hold the Board to account for the performance of its duties.
At a local level, CSIA has its own Local Governing Body (LGB), made up of dedicated individuals referred to as local governors. These individuals play a vital role in ensuring the highest standards of education, safeguarding, and leadership are maintained at the school. Mr Stephen Webb is Chair of the LGB and supported by Mr Greg Springer, Mrs Helen Reilly, Mr Rich Caitlin, Mr Asif Tahir and Mrs Mel Pomery.
Governance functions are delegated to the LGB via Athena’s Scheme of Delegation, which sets out the specific responsibilities entrusted to each LGB and its committees. Trustees retain complete discretion over what is delegated, allowing flexibility and tailored governance support at the local level.
There are strong, direct lines of communication between the Chair of Trustees and the Chair of the LGB, ensuring alignment between school-level governance and Athena-wide strategy. Collaborative structures such as termly chairs’ briefings and shared service committees promote consistency, transparency, and strategic coherence across all schools within Athena.
Athena's governance is coordinated by the Head of Governance and Compliance, who supports the effective operation of the Board and its various committees. Some schools within Athena also appoint their own clerks to governing bodies to support local governance administration.
At CSIA, our governors are committed to supporting the school’s leadership, challenging performance, and championing our values to ensure every student thrives.

I bring a diverse background to my role as Chair of Governors at Camborne Science and International Academy. With over 20 years of experience in facilities management, including at board level, I possess strong leadership and strategic planning skills.
Since relocating to Cornwall in 2016, I have dedicated myself to education, initially retraining as a primary school teacher. Currently, I work in public health and wellbeing, driven by a passion for enhancing the mental health and well-being of individuals, particularly young people.
I am proud to serve as a governor at Camborne Science and International Academy. This exceptional school boasts a dedicated leadership and staff committed to providing students with the highest quality education and the best possible opportunities for their future.
I joined the Governing Body in December 2022 and was appointed Chair in January 2024. I am committed to working collaboratively with the school leadership team, staff, students, and parents to ensure the continued success of Camborne Science and International Academy.

I have lived in Camborne since 1993, having grown up in Redruth after my family relocated from South Wales. Over the years I’ve spent my leisure time playing keyboards in local bands.
Deciding against university, I started work via an apprenticeship. My working career has been varied; working in various industries including engineering, manufacturing, sales, internet marketing, local authority and education.
Not entirely new to governance, I was a councillor for Illogan Parish Council between 2008 and 2012. During this time I sat on the planning committee and produced an issue of the Illogan Review newsletter.
I’m well-known in the local community and hope I can contribute to and support CSIA’s school governance.

John Ross attended secondary school and VI Form in Penzance before completing a degree in History and Law (LLB) and a post graduate LPC at the College of Law in Chester. He worked in the retail sector for several years, then worked as PADI Instructor in Cornwall and Egypt before completing his PGCE at the University of the West of England.
He has worked at Camborne Science and International Academy for over twenty years in a variety of roles. As the Head of History the Department was recognised by the County advisor as securing the best results in Cornwall. Since 2013 he has helped lead the VI Form as it has grown in numbers to over 200, be recognised by the independent ALPs group as consistently securing excellent results for students, and was very proud to be part of the team that saw OFSTED report the VI Form as Outstanding.

Launceston College Governor moved to CSIA Local Governing Body on 13th September 2024
Term Start Date: 13/09/24
Term End Date: 13/09/28
Having trained as an Earth Scientist, I then worked in the Telecoms and IT industry, as a software engineer. During this time I worked for several international companies before starting my own business. I 'retired' from this business when we moved to Cornwall, but then retrained as a teacher. I joined Launceston College in 2001 where I taught IT, Computing, Business Studies and Travel and tourism and became deputy head of the Sixth Form, using my skills with data to help improve the outcomes for the students by monitoring progress. I was involved in the trust being set up as a staff governor and remained on the LGB until the 2023-4 academic year when I was appointed Chair of Governors. I stepped down from this due to the travelling involved as I live locally to Camborne so I was excited to be able to transfer to CSIA.
