Our offer includes in-school workshops (booked by schools). However, you can also get involved through our after-school masterclasses, and two tailored programmes for high-potential learners who are looking to thrive: the Nexus Scholars Programme (for children recommended by local primary schools) for high-potential learners and the Nexus Explorers Programme (for children who are traveling from further afield). Whether through collaborative activities with primary schools or bespoke learning experiences, our outreach work ensures children are challenged, supported, and excited about the future.
Our Nexus Masterclass sessions provide an opportunity for students to experience Nexus lessons. Students will engage in a variety of different subjects, meet fellow gifted students from around the county and develop deeper thinking skills.
Each Masterclass will start at 3.45pm and then involve 3 x 30 minute sessions with three of our specialist teachers. The Liberal Arts Masterclass will include sessions on English, History and Modern Foreign Languages. The STEM Masterclass will include Maths, Science and Computing sessions. They will also meet some Nexus student leaders as well as become familiar with Nexus campus.
There are both Liberal Arts and STEM Masterclasses for Year 6 students in Autumn 2025 and for Year 5 students in Spring 2026.
The sign up forms for the Year 6 Masterclasses are below (Year 5 sign up forms to follow later in the year).
Year 6 STEM Masterclass – Thursday 16th October 2025
Year 6 Liberal Arts Masterclass – Thursday 23rd October 2025
- Y5 students only
- Current primary school must NOT be within the Camborne area
- Parents to provide transport to/from Nexus
As part of our extended primary outreach, we are offering a programme of gifted sessions in Maths to Year 5 students who live outside of the Camborne area. (Students who go to our traditional Camborne feeder schools have access to outreach sessions through their own schools).
These sessions will take students beyond the KS2 curriculum in Mathematics, with our specialist staff introducing concepts which would not have been encountered previously and will engage students in the application of Maths.
The programme is free of charge and takes place at the Nexus campus next to Camborne train station. We run the Maths Explorers on Wednesday afternoons (1345 – 1445) on a fortnightly basis.
Please note that these are not stand-alone sessions and form part of a programme of lessons throughout the year (Oct – June). However, if we are oversubscribed (as in previous years) we may split the year into two cohorts, one programme running from Oct to Feb and the second from Feb to June. More information on this will follow depending on the level of interest shown.
Parents / carers will need to make their own arrangements in order to drop off and collect their child from the sessions as well as asking permission from the primary school in order to attend the programme.
Please sign up using the Google Form below to register your interest in the Maths Explorers programme.
We are delighted to be able to offer, once again, the Year 5 Science workshops which are led by our enthusiastic science team at Nexus.
They offer an opportunity for aspiring young scientists to take part in an exciting science investigation as well as find out more about a chosen area of science.
The workshops take place fortnightly on a Monday throughout the year and are offered to all Cornish primary schools for students in Year 5. There are two bookable workshop slots each fortnight – 12 - 1pm and 1.30 - 2.30pm. Each session is reserved exclusively for one primary school.
There is a choice of workshops available for each session aimed to support the science curriculum in schools. Workshops are free and so early booking is recommended.

The Year 5 Nexus Maths Olympiad 2025 was an excellent day for Mathematics, with a permanent buzz of excitement filling the air. During the morning, the students investigated combinations of locks, solved logics puzzles and investigated super powers, finding a unique connection themselves. In round one of the afternoon competition, the four students worked independently and a quiet hush descended upon the room as they each worked on a different set of very difficult questions, earning points for their team. In round two they worked as a team and a buzz of discourse and excitement echoed around the room as students questioned and challenged each other to ensure they had the correct answer. It was very close after round one, but the team stages is what separated the top three teams. Congratulations to Newquay Junior Academy for winning the Olympiad this year. They are returning champions from two years ago and should be proud of their efforts. Tregony earnt the silver medal and Perran-ar-Worthal brought home the bronze. Everyone who participated should be proud to have been selected to represent their schools. The Maths teachers at Nexus thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and from the smiles and positive comments as they left, I feel the students did as well.
